Because the First Day of Spring Deserves Flowers

Six weeks. I only have six weeks left with them. I can only send them into the long sweet days of summertime with hope for the school year ahead. Hope blooms in the spring. The long bleak days of winter give way to the glittering promises of new leaves, bright green with possiblities. The bitter and barren earth becomes lush and soft. It swells with life that was buried under the weight of death and decay during the dark long nights. It was during the winter months that the seeds of skill were planted that are finally evident in the classroom. Students are reading to learn in the spring rather than learning to read. The days move along faster because the children are finally writing to prove what they learn instead of learning to write. This cycle will continue every year of school and really, it never stops. The cycle of hope, hard work, reward for effort and perserverance causes the flowers to bloom and mankind to continue on day after day. Teaching gets in the soul in the same manner as gardening... and happiness too, if truth be told. I came home to the delightful surprise of flowers on the first day of spring with a note that conveyed the gentle importance of that first day filled with hope. I hope that you see your children in bloom now; flowers for spring.
